Recent Art From Indonesia: Contemporary Art Turn

With the rising prominence of contemporary Indonesian art on the global art scene which has been attracting the strong interest of international art collectors, SBin Art Plus presents Recent Art From Indonesia: Contemporary Art Turn, one of the most extensive exhibitions of Indonesian art to date in Singapore.

Reflecting the increased intensity of contemporary Indonesian art, the exhibition is a vivid, emotional and expressive showcase of fresh artistic perspectives by 40 of Indonesia’s most talented artists both established and emerging. These include renowned artists Christine Ay Tjoe, Ugo Untoro, FX Harsono and Agapetus A Kristiandana.

Specially selected as a compilation of modern artistic representation to enhance the Indonesian contemporary art appreciation experience, the exhibition features a total of 60 art works of sculpture, painting and installations in mediums which range from acrylic and oil on canvas, to ceramic, wood and bronze.

According to the exhibition’s curator Asmudjo Jono Irianto, the exhibition is a visual statement of how the latest state of contemporary art in Indonesia has been affected by the global art scene, yet at the same time retains its distinctive “localness”.

He said: “Fluid and plural, this exhibition does not limit itself to artworks with a certain theme or direction but showcases the variety of current concerns and messages in Indonesia through different mediums.”

Recent Art From Indonesia: Contemporary Art Turn opens on 8 May at 3pm and will run through to 18 May. The gallery is open from 11.00am to 5.00pm on Sundays and public holidays and is closed on Mondays. “In The Mood For Love” – Solo Exhibition by Vincent Chow

Engineer-turned-artist Vincent Chow, will be holding his first solo exhibition “In The Mood For Love”, at fill-your-walls, an art gallery dedicated to promoting affordable art by emerging local artists.

Vincent’s exhibition  of 20 paintings showcases his process of self-exploration, largely influenced by contemporary fashion styles and trends. Reinterpreting what he observes and feels, this series reflects the aspirations and passion of his generation, who are now at the prime of their lives.

Vincent views this series as adventurous and playful experiments. His approach to painting is one of destroying what is on the canvas to seek new directions and ideas, largely inspired by jazz music  where ‘improvisation often creates unexpected outcomes’. Having come from a background in music also inspires him to create abstract painting with lyrical effects.

Being inclined to present his art in an unpolished manner, Vincent keeps it natural and unpretentious,  as he feels it mirrors human frailties and vulnerability in a poetic and spiritual manner. With the paintings’ composition extending beyond the boundaries of  the canvas,  Vincent manages to capture the viewers’ imagination and invites them to roam beyond what they see and form their own version of completeness.

“In The Mood For Love” by Vincent Chow runs from 17 November till 6 December 2009 at the fill-your-walls gallery, which is located at 21 Tanjong Pagar Road #04-02. The exhibition is open from  10.00am  to 10.00pm daily except Wednesdays and Public Holidays. Admission is free. For enquiries, please call 6222 1667.
