This October, Element Art Space (formerly known as SBin Art Plus) presents Masses, a solo photography exhibition on China’s emergence as a powerful nation as provocatively portrayed and interpreted by established Chinese artist, Tie Ying.

Exploring China’s history as seen through his lens, Tie Ying’s solo showcase of 14 photography works traces China’s transition from the Cultural Revolution through to the rapid developments of current modernisation and the political ramifications behind the conflicting interests of an ambitious world power. His works also serve as a semi autobiographical documentation of his personal experience of living through that turbulent and unsettled period.

Through his works, Tie Ying attempts to re-create and reconstruct the optical truth and memory. This is exemplified in Flags & Torches 02, where he created a visual disturbance in the image that China showcased to the world to question the success of the Beijing Olympics in 2008, and the public’s knowledge of what really went on behind the scenes.

Masses runs from 7 October through to 30 October 2011. The gallery is open from 11.00 am to 7.00 pm from Tuesdays to Saturdays, 11.00 am to 5.00 pm on Sundays and public holidays and is closed on Mondays. The exhibition is held at Element Art Space at 140 Hill St. MICA Building #01-10/11/12 Singapore 179369. Contact number: 6883 2001. http://elementartspace.com

This March, SBin Art Plus will be holding its first photography exhibition – TOP POP, a digital image showcase of “Singapore Idealism” as interpreted by one of Indonesia’s most significant visual artists – Yogyakarta-based Angki Purbandono.

Using a technique known as scannography, Purbandono explores the dichotomy of Singapore, in a journey of self-discovery as to whether a country that is held up as a model of modernisation and globalisation, is as sterile and boring as its critics make out to be.

Featuring 22 works, TOP POP is Purbandono’s first solo exhibition in Singapore, and is based on observations made during a 15-day residency from January to February this year. His art resists categorization and appears to exist outside any specific culture, yet draws on the revolutionary energies that appear in ‘ordinary objects’ that are often unnoticed to conjure a world of unseen wonders and astounding aesthetic spectacles.

Purbandono employs and explores different images of discarded Barbie dolls – a symbol of popular culture that everyone can relate to – with local elements to portray the nation’s history, postmodern concepts and cultures. He encapsulates the essence of Singapore as an unusual dynamism of monumentalism and claustrophobic close-up, reflecting his increasing familiarity of the country in the progression of his works.

These are exemplified in works such as Little India and Ancestors, where he utilized flowers bought in Little India and jade skulls purchased from Chinatown to depict the Indian and Chinese heritages present in Singapore; Orchard Road which describes the fast-paced movement of Singaporeans depicted through a metal dishwasher scrub; and Phenomenal Mustafa – where dolls are enclosed within plastic bags to depict the popular culture of shopping malls and the plastic age we live in.

TOP POP showcases 22 digital images and runs from 10 March till 10 April 2011. The gallery is open from 11.00am to 7.00pm from Tuesdays to Saturdays, 11.00am to 5.00pm on Sundays and public holidays and is closed on Mondays.

SBin Art Plus celebrates the joy of a mother’s love this December, with its first solo exhibition entitled Happyartland, featuring the work of one of Indonesia’s most promising female contemporary artists Theresia Agustina S or “Tere” as she is known in the arts circles.

Portraying the joy and happiness that every mother hopes for her child, Tere draws much of her inspiration from watching the world through the eyes of her young daughter Blora. Reflecting the simplicity and innocence of child’s play, Tere’s showcase of 10 works in various mediums including drawing, sculpture and graphic art, are creative expressions that depict a childlike delight in the discovery of a happy world full of wonders and new experiences.

Tere’s work is natural and unpretentious, bringing into play diverse and multi-interpretive themes that are lightly articulated in uncomplicated forms. Deceptively simplistic at first glance, the art inspires viewers to embark on a journey of self-discovery, to recall and relive the pure childlike innocence that comes with the joy of play. The hope is by doing so, they will be able to reinterpret the world that they now know and perhaps have taken for granted, by looking at it again through the eyes of a child.

Tere has been an active member of artists’ initiative groups in Indonesia, especially in Yogyakarta where she studied art at the Indonesian Institute of Arts. Her work has been widely exhibited throughout Indonesia and has also participated in group exhibitions in Singapore, Malaysia, Bulgaria and Spain.

Happyartland opens on 3 December and will run through to 24 December. The gallery is open from 11.00 am to 7.00 pm from Tuesdays to Saturdays, 11.00 am to 5.00 pm on Sundays and public holidays and is closed on Mondays. The exhibition is held at SBin Art Plus at 140 Hill St. MICA Building #01-10/11/12 Singapore 179369. Andy Warhol was born Andrew Warhola in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1928 of Czech immigrant parents. After studying pictorial design and art history, sociology and psychology at the Carnegie Institute of Technology, he moved to New York in 1949.

There he began a very successful career as a commercial artist working with department stores and advertising agencies as well as for Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, Glamour and The New York Times.

After his first individual show at the Hugo Gallery, exhibiting fifteen drawings based on the Writings of Truman Capote Warhol`s work was exhibited in several other venues during the 1950’s, including his first group show at The Museum of Modern Art in 1956.

The 1960’s had been an extremely prolific decade for Warhol and in 1960 came his first pictures of comic strips and company logos. Between 1962 and 1964 he produced over 2,000 pieces at his workshop know as “The Factory”. Taking images from popular culture, Warhol created many paintings that remain icons of 20th-century art, such as the Campbell’s Soup Cans, Disasters and Marilyns.

During the early 1970’s, Warhol began publishing “Interview” magazine and renewed his focus on painting and in particular commissioned portraits. Warhol began the 1980’s with the publication of POPism, The Warhol ’60’s and with the exhibitions of Portraits of Jews of the Twentieth Century, the Retrospectives and Reversal series.

After surviving being shot and seriously wounded by Valerie Solanis in July 1968 the flamboyant Andy Warhol died in 1987 during a routine gallbladder operation. In 1994 The Andy Warhol Museum was opened in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Andy Warhol will be best remembered as the inventor and most famous exponent of Pop Art where he took the technique of silk screening to a completely new level. Warhol also had the gift of understanding “defining moments” and important people of a generation and the ability of bringing people together with every day icons and household items. For any collector or enthusiast to begin to appreciate Pop Art, its origins, its development and its soul, Warhol`s works are a must see!
